How to Make Bone Broth In Instant Pot

/

How to make bone broth in Instant Pot is one of the popular search queries related to making bone broth. Instant Pot isn’t the only high-performance pressure cooker on the market, but it is certainly one of the best.

Its price, features, and performance are some of the reasons why many people prefer using instant pot to other pressure cookers. If you love making bone broth in just about 3 hours, then you’ll love this pressure cooker.

What is Bone Broth?

Bone broth is made by simmering bones, herbs, spices and vegetables. The end-product is a nutrient-dense broth that offers a lot of health benefits. Depending on the bone, you would have to simmer the broth for about 24 – 48 hours.

The long-simmering time liberates the nutrients from the bones which offer many of the numerous benefits you can get from bone broth.

The problem is, simmering your broth for 24 hours (a whole day) can be a really tedious task. Most people don’t have enough time to do so and prefer to buy bone broth off stores.

Unfortunately, the bone broth you find in stores can never be as good as the one you make yourself. This is because most of them aren’t simmered long enough while others contain artificial ingredients, additives, and flavors.

It is best to make the bone broth yourself. If you’re worried about the simmering time, you can just get yourself an Instant Pot.

What Is An Instant Pot?

Instant Pot is a manufacturing company that produces pressure cookers under the brand name “Instant Pot”. Pressure cookers are cooking devices that use high pressure to cook food in a short period of time. Most pressure cookers cook food 70 percent faster than any other cooking method.

That means you can prepare bone broth in 3 hours. That’s 21 hours cut off the normal cooking time. If you’re worried about the flavor and nutrients in the ingredients, then you should know that pressure cookers got you covered.

Pressure cookers improve the flavor and retain the nutrients in the food, so you don’t need to worry. However, you shouldn’t overcook or undercook your bone broth or you’ll end up regretting ever using one.

Just stick to a cooking time of 3 hours and you will end up with a great bone broth.

Instant Pot Basics

There are some things you need to do and know if you’re using an Instant Pot for the first time.

1. Read the Manual

When using an Instant Pot for the first time, it is important that you read the manual first. Even if you’ve used other pressure cookers, go through the manufacturer’s manual carefully and get to know all the features and controls of the cooker.

Every manufacturer introduces different features into their models. You should make sure you read the manufacturer’s manual completely even if you have used a different model of an Instant Pot.

2. Initial Test Run

Before you make bone broth or cook anything with your instant pot, you should first run a test on the cooker. This test helps you familiarize yourself with the cooker and its features. The test also confirms that the cooker is working properly

Through this test, you will learn how to use and depressurize an Instant Pot. You can find more about this test here.

How to Depressurize an Instant Pot

You should find enough information on this in the user’s manual. You can also check the FAQs page on their website for additional info.

Generally, all Instant Pot models use two types of depressurizing methods – the natural release method and the quick-release method. You can find more about that here.

How to Make Bone Broth Using Instant Pot

This Instant Pot Bone Broth recipe can be used to make all kinds of bone broth regardless of the type of bone you use.

Ingredients

  • Bones (you can use either chicken or beef bones. You can also mix the bones.)
  • Onions (roughly chopped)
  • Carrots (roughly chopped)
  • Celery (roughly chopped)
  • Black peppercorns
  • Thyme sprigs
  • Bay leaf
  • Apple cider vinegar

We don’t usually add salt as an ingredient but if you feel like you need your bone broth salted, then you can go ahead.

Roasting the bones is also optional. However, roasting the bones helps to improve the flavor of the broth.

Instructions

  1. Place the bones in the cooker and add all the ingredients including your Apple cider vinegar. Fill the pot with water (make sure the water is below the max line)
  2. Set the Instant pot for high pressure for 3 hours. We don’t recommend you going above 3 hours but you can go below it. If you’re using fish bones, then the cooking time should be between 30 minutes to 1 hour.
  3. When done, allow the Instant Pot to depressurize naturally.
  4. Strain the broth through a strainer and pour into mason jars.
  5. Allow it to cool to room temperature before placing it in the refrigerator or freezer for storage. Do not store bone broth for more than 5 days in the refrigerator. The freezer option can preserve bone broth for up to 3 months.
  6. When ready to serve, simply take it out of storage, reheat it to the desired temperature and serve. You can add spices or herbs to improve the flavor while reheating.

Instant Pot Features

Instant Pot has a lot of features which make it one of the best choices in the market today. These features make Instant Pot models one of the best among pressure cookers in the market.

Pressure Sensor

Instant Pot comes with a pressure sensor just underneath the heating element. This pressure sensor helps control the pressure during the cooking process to prevent steam leaking. This is one of the features that make the Instant Pot safe to use.

Safety Mechanisms

The major concern most people have about using pressure cookers is safety. In the past, the chances of your pressure cooker exploding were really high. Although it wasn’t dangerous enough to cause very serious damage to a person, it was still a hazard.

All Instant Pot models come equipped with 10 safety mechanisms that should prevent an explosion or any other incident. These safety mechanisms include

  • Pressure regulator
  • Anti-blockage
  • Safety lid lock
  • Lid-position sensor detector
  • Automatic temperature control
  • High-temperature monitoring
  • Automatic pressure controller
  • Electrical current and temperature regulator
  • Excess pressure protection
  • Leaky lid detector

All these safety mechanisms work together to make sure the Instant Pot is completely safe to use.

Warranty

All Instant Pot models come with a limited 12-months warranty. A limited warranty means that there are several restrictions, limitation, and exclusions on the warranty. You can check the user’s manual to know these limitations.

How to Choose the Best Instant Pot

There are several things you should consider when choosing an Instant Pot. An Instant Pot isn’t only used for making bone broth, you can use it for other foods too. Your choice should be based on how the cooker will work for you generally and not just for making bone broth.

Size

Size is a very important factor to consider. The size you go for should depend on the number of people that you’re feeding. When making bone broth, you might have to use a lot of bones, sizes like 3-quart aren’t good enough to take on a lot of bones.

You can for a large 6-quart Instant Pot, however, the largest size is its 8-quart model.

Functionality

All Instant Pot models come with a lot of features, however, some come with more features. Some features like altitude adjustment can only be found in the Instant Pot Ultra and Instant Pot Max

Pressure canning, max pressure, and nutriboost technology can only be found in the Instant Pot Max. The Instant Pot Smart WiFi comes with unique functionality that allows you to control it through the Instant Pot App.

The features you go for should depend on the reason you bought the instant pot and your budget.

Budget

Depending on the type of Instant Pot you’re going, it should cost about $40 to $300. Prices are based on the size and the features of the cooker. If you’re going for large sizes (like an 8-quart Instant Pot), then you should expect to spend more.
